So here we are, almost at the
end of a very long and cold February. If you are anything like me, you can’t
wait for the warmer weather to get here, and see the first signs of spring. Unfortunately,
we all know it will still be a while before that happens. So, if you have the
cold wintery blues, why not celebrate spring a bit earlier. Why wait for Mother
Nature to sprout from the outdoors, when we can have a little bit of her right
now. Yes I am talking about spring bulbs! Those wonderful tulips, happy
daffodils, wonderfully scented hyacinths, not to forget the shy little crocus
or grape hyacinth. They are all out there for us to give and receive. I am sure
that having a pot of wonderfully happy spring bulbs will make us all feel a bit
warmer and happier inside.
There are many types of bulb plants you
can choose at this time of year. We carry many varieties here at Edgewood, and
if you can’t find it, we can always order it in for you. If you can’t decide
what type you would like, then how about a spring bulb planter? This is a
mixture of bulb plants done up nicely in either a ceramic container, or basket.
Bulb plants are easy to care for, just give
them a bit of water (no need to drown them!)You can always check the soil, if
it feels dry to the touch, add a bit of water. If you want them to open up quickly, place
them in a very bright and warm location in your home. If you want them to last
as long as possible, then place in a cooler location, and in a bit less of a
sunny spot (they still need light though).
The strongest scented bulb would be the paper
whites. Hyacinths last the longest, and are also quite scented. The most popular bulb, (world wide), are the
daffodils (I know I thought it was the tulip as well). But tulips are the most
diverse when it comes to color choices of bulb plants. No matter which way you
look at it, they are all beautiful. It is, however, unfortunate that bulb
plants do not last as long as we would like, but they certainly shout out
spring time to me.
So forget the cold, the windchill, the
snow... and think about spring! Get yourself some of nature’s finest smiles,
the awesomely happy spring bulbs!!
