Happy International Women’s Day!

Yes today is March the 8, which is the day we celebrate all women. Of course being a woman myself, I think we should be honored every day (lol just kidding).

International Women’s Day was first started (officially) in Europe around 1917 Though Russia had their first International Women’s Day in the year 1913.  By now it is recognized almost everywhere around the world. Some places even give thanks to their women employees by giving them the day off work (I like this idea!)

So in the spirit of today, I thought I would give thanks to some women who, with their innovation, have changed our lives in so many ways.

Here is a list of female inventors that have helped shape our world as we know it.

Tabitha Babbitt – in 1813 invented the circular saw. Though she did not patent it, she is credited with the invention

Mary Walton – in 1879 invented the locomotive chimney.

Maria Beasley – in 1882 invented the life raft.

Josephine Cochrane – in 1887 invented the dishwasher (although it has been improved on since).

Margaret Wilcox – in 1893 invented the first car heater.

Letitia Geer – in 1899 invented the one handed medical syringe.

Margaret E. Knight – in 1902 invented the rotary engine. In 1913 invented the internal combustion engine. Actually she has 87 patents, quite the accomplishment!

El Dorado Jones – in 1913 invented the first airplane muffler

Florence Parpart – in 1914 invented the refrigerator

Ida Forbes – in 1917 invented the electric water heater

Hedy Lamarr – in 1941 invented “frequency hopping” technology, which fundamentals are used in today’s Wi-Fi and GPS

Nancy Johnson – in 1943 invented the ice cream freezer, still used today to make ice cream

Dr. Maria Telkes – in 1947 invented the first thermoelectric power generator (solar heating)

Stephanie Kwolek – in 1966 invented Kevlar. This steel like fiber is used in bullet proof vests, radial tires and helmets

These are just a few of the women who have made significant inventions that have helped shape our world. So Happy International Woman’s Day to all!! Hope you give the women in your life a little acknowledgement today and some flowers wouldn’t hurt either!
